We ordered Chinese Food tonight, and went to pick it up as we usually do. On the way there we noticed some big Halloween thing with a local radio station in the supermarket parkinglot near the chinese place. Lots of people in costumes, and a few firetrucks. Some of which were racing away with lights and sirens blazing.

We picked up our food and started driving home. My husband pointed out a huge plume of smoke behind the subway... from the corner of the same rental garages my parents rent!!!

The illegal paint shop at the end was being watered down by the local police force, toxic paints were burning and putting out vile smoke. After talking briefly to an officer on duty, and telling him what we knew about the owners, and giving them my parents info, I went into the Open Pantry gas station where they let me use the phone to call my mom.

'Mom, the building where your warehouse is is on fire'

'ok, I'll be right there'

'wait! there's a lot of smoke, they've blocked out the roads, you'll have
to come behind the subway, to the parking lot'

'ok. They were supposed to be out of that garage today...'

'do you want me to wait?'

'yes, please'

Our food was too warm to eat as we waited for them to arrive. Soon the fire was calmed, and we watched the firemen roll up the hoses on two of the trucks.

My parents finally drove up, and we all took the keys over to open up their garage, so the firechief could check their place for smoke, for fire.

No fire, just smoke. But...
My parents business is in books. Smoke damage ruins resale value. This is almost all their inventory, two years worth, shelves and shelves.

This is horrible, my parents own their own biz, and just the smoke, is such a blow, from antiques to college and highschool books, all of it ruined, plus the place is coated with toxic fumes/ect. When we left my throat was icky, and my mouth tasted metallic.

There's insurance, but only some. and in an Inventory biz...

It was really hard to watch my mom and dad with tears just barely gleaming in their eyes. They sent us home just after my grandparents arrived.

Strange though, the people were supposed to be out of their garage tommorrow, and their garages were full of stuff, including a van still waiting to be painted. Too much stuff to move by tommorrow.

sigh. Could you pray for my Parents, this is a huge blow to the biz they've been building for years.

~~~ (edit, later)
almost 10:00pm, they're trying to get some of the inventory out, it's cold out there, and the fumes are still there, and the electricity is out. :(
so sorry
I'm really sorry to hear about your parents.
I wish them all the luck with the insurance and being able to keep the inventory. It was very lucky you were able to help them so quickly I'm sure that helped.
Oh man, what a bummer! I saw that on the news last night. I hope your family makes it through this ok, and that they are able to rebuild their business.
