"One potential problem with Dark Cloud 2 is that it doesn't fully reveal itself until you're about ten hours in. It's not hard to imagine someone playing for two hours, and losing interest in favor of something flashier and more immediately gratifying. But if you stick with it, over the course of those first ten hours, it will gradually integrate several different types of gameplay into a unified system."

And it's really funny, because, while the game is soo beautiful, I wasn't sure I liked it well enough to keep going... until about 10 hours in. (Obviously enough interested me to be curious, and it's a rental...)
Things really got going for me when they introduced the female character, Monica. But it's cool because you have to play both characters because npc's will react/talk to you different depending on who you are.
The game really is a lot of fun, addictive even. And unique, first time I've ever played a rpg in which you don't level up... at all...
Your weapons do. What a cool concept! You didn't forget how to walk or run or fight, you just needed better tools. And, the upgrade system is fun, and offers branches, so sometimes you get a choice between the upgrades due to the exp of the weapon.
And, strangely enough, the random dungeons don't feel random. Must be part of the beauty of the style. The graphics are really outstanding and the character designs are really nice too. Plus, it has an extensive help system in case you forget one of the numerous things they teach you how to do.
I'd suggest you at least give it a rental, it's really worth a deep look.
